In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the essential steps to start your invention journey with confidence. From idea generation to commercialization, buckle up as we explore the world of inventing together!
Step 1: Ideation - Unleash Your Creativity
Every successful invention starts with a great idea. Allow your imagination to soar and identify problems or gaps in the market that you are passionate about solving. Brainstorm ideas, conduct research, and keep a journal to document your thoughts and insights. By immersing yourself in the world of innovation, you can uncover the next big breakthrough.

Step 2: Research and Validation - Solidify Your Concept
Once you have several ideas, it's vital to validate their viability. Research intellectual property databases, market trends, and potential competitors to ensure your concept is unique and has market potential. Develop a prototype or create virtual mock-ups to test your idea's feasibility and gather feedback from potential users. Step 3: Intellectual Property Protection - Safeguard Your Invention
Protecting your invention is crucial to prevent others from replicating your idea without permission. Consult a patent attorney to assess the patentability of your invention and guide you through the legal processes. Apply for patents, trademarks, or copyrights to protect your intellectual property and ensure exclusivity in the market.

Step 4: Prototype Development - Transform Your Idea into Reality
Now it's time to bring your idea to life! Collaborate with product designers, engineers, and manufacturers to develop functional prototypes. This iterative process will help refine your invention's design and functionality. Embrace feedback, make necessary adjustments, and focus on scalability and cost-effectiveness for mass production.
Step 5: Market Analysis - Understand Your Target Audience
To successfully commercialize your invention, you need to understand your target market. Conduct thorough market research to identify your potential customers, their needs, and preferences. Analyze competitors and identify unique selling propositions (USPs) that differentiate your invention. This knowledge will guide your marketing and sales strategies, ensuring the right message reaches the right people.

Step 6: Funding and Financing - Fuel Your Invention's Journey
Bringing an invention to market requires financial resources. Explore various funding options like bootstrapping, crowdfunding, angel investors, venture capitalists, or government grants. Develop a compelling business plan that showcases the market potential and profitability of your invention to attract potential investors. Remember, securing adequate funding is crucial for scaling up production and marketing efforts.
Step 7: Commercialization - Launch Your Invention
It's time to introduce your invention to the world! Develop a comprehensive marketing strategy, including online and offline channels, to create awareness and generate excitement. Leverage social media, press releases, and industry networking to reach potential customers and business partners. Monitor feedback and adapt to the market's needs to ensure a successful launch.

Step 8: Continuous Innovation - Stay Ahead of the Game
Successful inventors never stop innovating. Continuously seek improvements, gather customer feedback, and identify opportunities to enhance your product. Stay up to date with market trends, emerging technologies, and industry advancements to maintain a competitive edge. Strive for ongoing innovation to build a sustainable and prosperous invention empire.
Becoming an inventor is a thrilling and challenging endeavor. By following this quick startup guide, you are well-equipped to embark on your invention journey. Hi, I’m Brian Fried and I’m an inventor just like you. Do you have this great idea for an invention in your head? Are you ready to learn how to make money with that invention?
This book is about taking action so you can take that great idea out of your head and make smart decisions to help you make money. Here’s how it works:
- We’re going to walk through the steps of getting started with your big idea.
- We’ll also explore how to turn your idea into a real prototype.
- We’ll discover resources to protect your ideas and, of course, help plan your future.
As a serial inventor myself, many of my inventions have reached retail where people can buy my products on TV infomercials and home shopping channels, catalogs, and online retailers through licensing and manufacturing. I’ve also mentored and represented other inventors for 15+ years at all stages of their inventions, providing feedback and product development, understanding of licensing and manufacturing and also providing turnkey solutions to help make ideas a reality. I’ve participated as a public speaker at major tradeshows and I continue to lead innovation groups around the country.
So why did I write this book? I want to provide the opportunity for more inventors to learn the process it takes to experience the invention brought to life. Not only to make your invention a reality, but to learn how to earn from your inventions.
I’m honored that you’ve decided to take this step with me.
Now, let’s begin.
-Brian Fried
