Is she merely a bystander or does she have something to hide?

Then there's Samuel Adams, the charming yet mysterious book dealer who seems to have a secret agenda of his own. His connections to both the victim and the other suspects make him a central figure in the investigation. As Hartley continues to dig deeper into the case, she unravels a complex web of relationships, all intricately woven around Adams.

In 1891, Yvette Sinclair, a student at Adelaide College, located in the town of Booker Falls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, was found dead in the library where she worked part time. She had been strangled.
The two primary suspects were Yvette’s boyfriend, Paul Momet and “Creepy” Claude Amyx, long-time college custodian and somewhat slow-witted son of the founder of the college, Louis Amyx. Neither was ever charged and the crime remained unsolved.
In 1919, twenty-seven-year-old Myrtle Tully, recently returned to America from serving with the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe, is now employed in the same library where Yvette was murdered. While searching in the basement of the library for a manuscript requested by one of the professors, she comes across a cache of letters received by Yvette. The letters, written by different individuals, are in English, except one written in French, and appear to have been written by admirers or lovers of Yvette, individuals with whom she might have been, or was, sexually intimate. Most were signed, but with pseudonyms. And each set, save for one, contained various threats of one sort or another.
With the help of Henri de la Cruz, the county constable, and Daisy O’Hearn, Myrtle’s best friend and fellow resident of the boarding house where the three of them live, Myrtle sets out to uncover the almost three decades-old mystery of who killed Yvette Sinclair, in the process uncovering enough evidence for the arrest, trial and conviction of a suspect.
But Myrtle is not convinced of the individual’s guilt. She continues investigating, which ultimately results in her own life being put in peril by the real killer.
