This account of late nineteenth century upper-class society in the South American country of Peru comes from American adventurer Frank Vincent. Vincent travelled extensively in South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, and wrote published popular books about his travels. In the 1870s, for example, he travelled through Southeast Asia, becoming the first American to visit the ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The ruins of this ancient Khmer city had been “discovered” a decade earlier by a French explorer. In the 1880s, Vincent embarked on a voyage across all the countries of South America, visiting Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, the Falkland Islands, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Barbados, Guyana (British Guiana at the time),Suriname (or Dutch Guiana),French Guiana (or Guyane),and Venezuela.
In this excerpt, Vincent describes his experiences among the upper-class Peruvians in the capital of Lima. Many of the wealthy Peruvians, Vincent wrote, had been educated in New York or Paris, and spoke English and French in addition to Spanish. He described the luxurious homes of the elite, and a Roman Catholic religious procession that he witnessed in the streets of Lima. Vincent was particularly captivated by the beauty of the upper-class “señoritas”, whom he wrote, were “eminently capable of making a crusty old bachelor see the error of his ways”. Vincent was less impressed by the weather in Lima, complaining that it was constantly wet and rainy, and that the streets were always “muddy and slippery.” This was apparently because Vincent visited the city during the rainy season.
Frank Vincent died on June 19th, 1915, in Woodstock, New York.
