The First Visit

Emma recounts her first visit to the diner, where everything felt overwhelming. The bright lights, loud chatter, and the smell of various dishes made her sensory sensitivities go into overdrive. However, with the support of her parents and her coping mechanisms, she managed to navigate through the chaos and enjoy a delicious meal.

The Second Visit

On her second visit, Emma's familiarity with the diner helped ease her anxieties. She noticed the patterns of the staff, the menu, and the regular customers. Emma found comfort in the routine, and the familiar faces brought her a sense of belonging. This time, she tried to engage in small talk with the waitress and even struck up a brief conversation with a friendly couple at the neighboring table.

The Third Visit

The third visit to the diner proved to be the most memorable for Emma. Through her observations, she discovered that the diner's owner had a soft spot for vintage children's books. Emma, a passionate bibliophile, decided to bring along her favorite childhood book to share with the owner. This act of kindness opened up a world of unexpected connections and friendships. Emma found herself engaging in conversations, sharing stories, and even receiving book recommendations.

Lessons Learned

Through her experience at the diner, Emma learned valuable lessons about embracing challenges, pushing boundaries, and finding joy in the unexpected. She discovered that her unique perspective of the world gave her the ability to connect with others in ways she never thought possible.

The Impact

Emma's story serves as an inspiration to others living with Asperger's Syndrome or anyone struggling with social anxieties. Her determination to face her fears, step out of her comfort zone, and seek connection with others is a reminder that we all have the power to overcome our obstacles and find our place in the world.

Going Diner For The Third Time: An Aspie Girl In Massachusetts Diner Short Story brings to life the challenges and triumphs of a young girl navigating through the complexities of her condition. It serves as a testament to the power of human connection, the importance of understanding and acceptance, and the beauty of embracing our unique qualities. So, next time you visit a small diner, take a moment to appreciate the stories and experiences that unfold within its walls.

Going Diner for the Third Time is the third book in the Diner Short Story Mysteries series. These short stories are about 15-20 pages each and feature authentic diners around Massachusetts. Author Lisa Shea goes to each diner personally to write up its sights, sounds, and aromas. That way you, the reader, can take a virtual vacation to these historic locations! Visit Lisa's webpages to see photos and write-ups of the diners. All of the Diner Mystery series contain no violence, no swearing, and no intimacy, so they are suitable for teens and up.

You can read the books one-by-one as they are released, or you can wait for the boxed sets to be published once the series gets enough books in it. It's your choice! I try to write them right after I visit, so that's why there are sometimes gaps in the release schedule. It's not always easy to get to a diner when they're open!

A portion of all proceeds benefits battered women's shelters.
